How can I start figure skating at age 17?

I'm almost 18 and I'm absolutely in love with watching figure skating.

But I'm afraid that I'm too old for the basics classes with kids and not old enough for adult classes.

I really want to learn quickly so I can compete while I'm young.

(Or at least try to, haha)

Does anyone have ideas? I feel like I'm running out of time :(|||Just call the rink and ask which class you should be placed into. There's always a class for any age at any decent rink.

As long as you aren't overly afraid of falling you can actually learn quicker than little kids, because you have fully developed motor skills and coordination, and you can listen and focus much better. You're unlikely to do triple jumps like the skaters you see on TV, but if you get double jumps you can compete at Adult Nationals (by the time you land doubles you'll be an adult.)

There's also competitions for every level, whether you're doing half-revolution jumps or double loops. So you have plenty of time to compete :)|||You can sign up for adult classes. I'm 14 and i was deciding between adult and kid classes. Go with the adult classes if, you sign up for the kid classes your gonna end up in a class with 5 and 6year olds. If you sign up in the summer your more likely to get in a small class. Classes are so small in the summer at my school they had to combine levels. No one at my rink even signed up for basics 1 this time around in the kids. At the adults you would fit in just perfectly! Adults there range anywhere from ages 13-40! Sign up for adult lessons. In the basics there's no point in signing up for private lessons because you will learn just as fast if you have a good teacher and they can move you up levels. Once you pass basics 8, i'd suggest private lessons for freestyle and beyond. You want learn as much as possible as soon as possible, but still enjoy the sport. Don't be discouraged if you can't learn something fast. It took me a month to get my 1foot glide(skating 2 times a week). If you wanna learn fast go ice skating at least 3times a week so you can practice and get good at all the techniques.

Good luck! And enjoy figure skating!

@liveyourlifeb- wow your name does NOT match what you just said, and plus what you just said is so untrue. I mean if you wanna get to nationals or something chances are you probably won't make it but just to figure skate because you want to it's never too late.|||You can start whenever you want :-)

I know it, because I'm 18 and I started this year. I'm from the Czech Republic and in my country there aren't many posibilities to do figure skating when you are older than 5 years. But fortunately I found a course for people of every age. We learn just basic things, but I'm happy because we do it for having a fun. Many older people start as well by paying lessons with their own coach. It is better because you learn more things and faster, but it's too expensive.

I wish you good luck! :-)|||Why would you be too old to have classes with kids? Just go to your local rink, tell them how old you are, and ask what's available.

I went to evening beginner classes for ages 10 and up. I was 30 at the time.|||well, if you are new, just go for the chair and hold on to it. Trust me I see a lot of people that are older doing that. And have someone by your side that you trust that know how to skate|||theres really no way because you learn while your young and you learn more when you get older, you can skate at indoor skating places and just have fun, but because your almost eighteen its almost impossible to compete because you dont know how to properly do anything...

sorry ..
