What age is good to start Figure Skating?

My cousin is 12 and wants to start figure skating do you think she'll be able to become a competitive skater?|||sure she can. but make sure shes dedicated and really wants it. Skating is very time consuming and requires hard work.|||Yeah i did figure skating before when I was around 10 and i quit at 13 it was very fun though it just takes a whole lot of work|||Probably around 5 and 6 so you can get them familiar with the ice and they're really flexible at that age. But, about your cousin i don't think shes gonna have much of a chance unless shes already good at skating...but then again you never know.|||Yeah, of course! Even if it's hard for her, they have adult competitions too! I HIGHLY doubt it could take anyone that long to compete though, She could probably be an amazing competitor by 15 if she worked hard! Tell her to go for it! It's so much fun!:)|||Yes!

You can start figure skating and be competitive at any age. Its really a great sport, so don't your age hold you back.

Good Luck! :-)|||yeah, but she has to work twice as hard. figure skating requires a lot of time and work including: off-ice jumping, ballet, pilates, and some conditioning. anyone can do it, I started at 8 1/2. Most people start at ages 3-6 though. Tell your cousin to maintain a positive atttitude at all times if she truly cares about skating. Attitudes help. Good luck!!!|||Any age. She has a good chance if she is naturally talented, a quick and eager learner, and committed. Johnny Weir started at 12 and look at him now. Keep in mind males have to learn quads, so I'm sure she can learn doubles and triples if she wants. Keep it realistic and realize you can start at 4 and never learn triples, it depends on the skater's ability. She has just as good of chance. Go for it.

Also: In case you didn't know it'll be expensive. She needs a coach not only to teach her the moves but you must have a coach and be a member of USFSA individually or part of a club to take tests. You must take two tests for whatever level you want to compete at.

********** Basically you perform the moves for judges who determine if you should compete those moves. The coach will help with the program. The membership is required to represent the skating federation. Coach costs vary, tests cost at least $40 each (which may vary, my club costs from that to $100, costing more the higher level you are), the competition fee varies, and a cheap skating dress varies. Then the cost for skates, ice time for practice and lessons with coach, skating accesories, ect. **********

The cost is the reason you must be committed!

OR

She can take group lessons which are cheaper and compete without paying for testing at freeskate levels. Downside? She'll progress slower because the whole class learns together.|||You can start at any age and 12 is still pretty young so definitely! If she wants to become a competetive skater she'll have to put a lot of work in and skate most days and have a private cach from the beginning, which is a little more expensive than group lessons. But if she just wants to do small competitions group lessons to start should be fine.

Have fun :)|||hey

any age is good to start!

im not a ice figure skater i did artistic skating(quads) for 5yrs started at 3yrs old and then i took up inline speed skating (great fun) :) but 12 is a good age to start and still have the time to become competitive if wonted :)|||SO many people ask this question.

no, she'll probably never make it to the olympics, but i started when i was 12 (i'm 15 now) and I've landed my axel and im starting doubles, I'm testing my intermediate MIF test in a few weeks (the 5th out of 8)

and i belong to a theater on ice team that competes internationally.

She can start and see if she likes it and once she's good enough to have a real program she can consider Theater on Ice or ice dancing, pairs, or Synchro, or she can just see how far she can get competing in singles.

Figure skating is really fun, I've met some of my best friends through it, and its really fun travelling and competing with a team.

She should definitely try, its always worth giving it a shot, and better late than never|||i started as 12 and was a "competitive skater" (vs the semi-competitive , which you still compete but not aiming for national or regionals)... however, she'll have a lot of catch up to do..

i skated 30-40 hours a week to play catch up. But in the end i withdrew from the competitive skating at age 18 because excessive skating caused permenate damange to my spin, knees, and hip. So just be careful.|||a good age to start is when your 3 yrs old|||she will be able to start and become sucsessful the younger the better though i started at the age of 9 and have been doing competetive skating for a while ao if i was her i would go for it and just try my best and practise

:]
